I've NOT Fallen Down a Well
The funny thing about having this blog is that I always have things to write about (especially when I can't be at my laptop to write), but never actually manage to sit down to do it. I wish I knew what the barrier is (besides laziness and the some time aversion of sitting down at a computer after doing so at my day job 45-50 hours a week), but instead I will just sit down and write whether or not I think I have a fabulous post that will win me fame and fortune. So this, my dear reader, is what I am about to do, even if it brief, nonsensical, and dull.
Favorite Thing of the Week
If you are a fan of the Allman Brothers Band (or even if you are not), I highly recommend checking out their catalog of live recordings at ABBlive.com. The band is known for its electrifying live shows in which no two are alike. You never know what songs they will pick from their prolific recordings or repertoire of non-recorded covers that often pepper their concerts. Similarly, guest musicians and artists will join ABB on stage, which is often a tasty treat.
Of their recent live recordings, I especially love the one from August 11, 2012 at Montage Mountain, PA on the second night of the Peach Festival. I actually watched the live performance stream from Moogis.com, drummer Butch Trucks' current project. This was certainly one of their best live performances I've witnessed in the ten or so shows I've seen of theirs. From the Juke Horns (of the Tedeschi-Trucks Band) performing on a spirited rendition of "Same Thing" to a goose-pimpling cover of Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic", this show is chock-full of great moments. If you are hankering for some of Gregg's growling vocals, Warren and Derek's perfect bottleneck playing, and the incredible jammy rhythms of Oteil, Mark, Jaimoe, & Butch, this is a must-have for both the long-time fan or the novice listener.
And It Came From My iPod
As heard in my rock-mommobileSaturday morning on "shuffle"...not exact order, but every song heard during the set...
1. "Escape" (Journey): just love Steve Perry's vocals on this better (and less-ubiquitous) 80s rock anthem that the one they gets played EVERYWHERE these days. You know of what I speak.
2. "The Weight": this Allman Brothers Band's cover of the Band classic (from the 2007 ABB show in Raleigh--yep, another live concert recording) is almost a new song featuring the soulful vocals of Warren Haynes.
3. "Hells Bells" (AC/DC): a great, great cut off of the amazing Back in Black album. At one time, I owned 2 vinyl copies. Sweet!
4. "Bad Reputation" (Joan Jett & the Blackhearts): "I Love Rock n'Roll" is great, but this is even better. If I had a theme song, this would be it!
5. Some Velvet Revolver song: no, I can't remember what it was and it's not a good idea to try to look at your iPod while driving on 440. Then again, does it really matter what it was? Scott Weiland, Slash, and company made some beautiful music together.
6. "Hella Good" (No Doubt): sometimes even the Suburban Rock Mom needs something to shake her booty to...
7. "Time Stand Still" (Rush): Geddy Lee plus Aimee Mann's back-up vocals equals something mighty nice for cruising the roads of Raleigh.
Until next time, keep it on "11"...
