And it Began with a Boy...
Picture this: it's 1983 and a eighth grade girl (then only a suburban rock teen) in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona gets her first boyfriend. He was blonde, cute, athletic, and a huge Rush fan. Really huge. Huge like all I remember that the only music I listened to around him was Rush. Huge like my friends and I used to refer to him as Geddy Lee. Okay, I think you get the picture.
But, alas things turned sour after two months or so. Yes, he broke my heart. In little tiny pieces. So much so that I still can't bear to listen to REO Speedwagon's "Keep on Lovin' You". Okay, maybe there is another reason why I don't like to listen to that power ballad.
Fastfoward 30 years... Tomorrow night, the former rock teen-now-rock mom gets to fulfill a longtime desire, to see the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's Canadian trio in concert. Yep, had to mention the Hall of Fame--only so nobody would think I was talking about Triumph.
How excited am I? Well, I've spent the last few months reading anything I can about Rush as well as been listening to whole slew of Rush CDs in my car singing at the top of lungs and trying to imitate drummer Neil Peart at every red light. I've watched Beyond the Lighted Stage documentary for the upteenth time and have tried in vain to guess the exact setlist for the show. I spent many hours on the web looking for the perfect Rush t-shirt to wear at the concert (no luck, as I couldn't decide between a Starman design and one from their Time Machine Tour ) and devouring the brilliant lyrics to memorize and interpret.
So, as think about the fact that I will be at the show in approximately 24 1/2 hours from now, I guess I can't help but to think about 1983 and the cute guy who liked Rush. Even though my first teen romance faded, my love for Rush's music has not. Thank you Geddy, Alex, and Neil for continuing to make great music so I can attach new and better memories when I listen to you.
P.S. For Alex, Geddy, & Neil--A meet and greet pass for the Raleigh show on 5/3/13 would definitely get me finally over that guy.
Until next time, keep it on "2112"...
