A Little Q&A for Friday

TGIF y'all...

I must say that I am really getting a kick out of writing this blog. Although this began for my own enjoyment, I am truly touched that actual people are reading and commenting on my posts. I hope it's okay with the person that wrote the following comment that I answer in a post as I just love questions, especially ones that are provocative. Thanks, "Anonymous"!

Thanks for reading!
As for the mixture of rock and rap in today's music, I think it is natural for these two genres to be linked as they both sprung forth from rhythm and blues. Thus, they really have more in common than not. Do I personally enjoy this combination? Heck, yeah!
The union between rock and rap in music has actually been going on since the early 80s when Blondie hit the airwaves with "Rapture", the first rap video played on MTV and the first rap single to hit #1 on the charts. It is widely acknowledged that the group was greatly influenced by the grandaddy of rap hits, 1979's "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang. In the song, Debbie Harry gives props to Grandmaster Flash and Fab Five Freddy, two of rap's early pioneers.
Moreover, the blend of the two genres continued through the eighties with Run DMC pairing up with Aerosmith with a cover of the latter's huge rock hit "Walk This Way" and the appearance of the Beastie Boys, which garnered respect from fans of both rock and rap. Later in the decade, heavy metal gods Anthrax teamed up with Public Enemy. The early 90s saw the combination of hard rock and rap on Ice-T 's "Cop Killer" CD and Rage Against the Machine's politically-tinged self-titled CD. Later in the 90s and through today has brought other groups like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park (one of my personal faves) to continue on this musical path...

Until next time, keep it on "11"...and stay tuned for my upcoming review the No Doubt show on 6/8, my friends...
