Word to Your Mother!
Happy Mother's Day to all of the rock moms out there whether you are suburban, urban, rural, small town. Of course, all moms deserve kudos, so you don't have to be a "rock mom" to rock!
Speaking of moms and rock, this occasion calls for my "Top 5 Songs with Mother/Mom/Mama in the Title". Do note that these aren't necessarily songs that you would want to dedicate to your mom or are even about your mom. They just fit the criteria with one simple word (or a derivative of it)...
5. "Mother's Little Helper"--The Rolling Stones
Yep, it took me a very long time to understand that the "little helper" wasn't a person...
4. "Tie Your Mother Down"--Queen
No, I don't think you'd really want to do this...
3. "Mama Kin"--Aerosmith
One of the very best songs from Steven Tyler and company that gets very little airplay and recognition in my opinion. Guns 'N Roses recorded a rockin' cover of this back when they were really Guns 'N Roses and not Axl with a backup band.
2. "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)"--Three Dog Night
Written by the eccentric and always interesting Randy Newman, this song was recorded first by The Animals and then by Mr. Newman himself before TDN released it. This version is the only one I've heard, so my comments are based only on that one. All in all, a great tune that truly epitomizes the decadence of youth--very fun and served as the perfect soundtrack for some scenes in the brilliant but uber-depressing "Boogie Nights".
1. "Mother Mother"--Tracy Bonham
Simply put, 90s angst at its finest.
Until next time, keep it on "11"...
